Choosing vegan chocolate

Good vegan chocolate starts with good cocoa, so the bean, the roast and the sugar matter more than the label. Many dark chocolate bars are vegan by recipe, with just cocoa, cocoa butter and sugar, but some add milk fat or are made on lines that handle milk. Check the ingredients and the allergen note on each bar. Mr Popple's makes its whole range plant-based, and Firetree marks some of its single-estate dark bars as vegan. Vegan Chocolate lists only the vegan chocolate bars, so it is the quickest place to shop if you avoid dairy. We checked each maker for how it sources cocoa and how clearly it explains what goes in the bar.

Bean-to-bar chocolate and single-estate dark chocolate bars

Bean to bar chocolate is made by one maker who roasts the beans, grinds them and moulds the bar, which keeps the flavour of each origin. Firetree makes most of the range here from cocoa grown on volcanic islands, including the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines, plus a Madagascar 84% bar. Cocoa content ranges between 40% milk and 100% dark, and there are thins, couverture for baking and tasting sets. Bouclé sells single-estate bars, such as dark sea salt and dark cherry. Start at around 70% if you are new to vegan dark chocolate, then work up.

Raw cacao and dairy free chocolate

Mr Popple's makes raw cacao bars and dark mylk bars, some sweetened with yacon, and most come in compostable wrappers. Flavours include organic orange, Amarillo chilli, minty mylk and creamy orange, and there are collections and monthly bar subscriptions. It also makes ceremonial cacao drink chunks. Organic Chocolate brings together the bars made with organic cocoa.

Chocolate gifts, snacks and baking

For presents, Firetree's letterbox selections and library sets fit through the door, and its chocolate and sparkling wine box suits a Christmas gift. Oh Lily Snacks coats popped water lily seeds in plant-based chocolate, and Creative Nature makes allergen-free chocolate rice bites, oat bars and baking buttons. Store chocolate somewhere cool and dry, away from strong smells. A white bloom on the surface is harmless and comes from warm storage. Gift Hampers & Boxes has more chocolate gift boxes, and Vegan living guide: What to eat, why it matters, and how to actually stick with it covers vegan swaps for the rest of the cupboard.

Common questions

Is dark chocolate always vegan?

No. Many dark chocolate bars are vegan by recipe, but some contain milk fat or milk powder, or carry a may-contain warning. Check the ingredients and allergen note on each bar.

What does bean-to-bar chocolate mean?

It means one maker handles every step, roasting the cocoa beans, grinding them and moulding the bar. This keeps the flavour of each origin and makes the supply chain easier to trace.

What is single-estate chocolate?

Single-estate chocolate uses cocoa from one farm or estate rather than a blend. Each bar tastes of its place, so two 72% bars can taste very different.

How should you store chocolate?

Keep it somewhere cool and dry, ideally below 20°C and away from strong smells. A white bloom on the surface is harmless and comes from heat or damp.
