Choosing handprinted cards

Handprinted cards are printed one at a time from a carved block, so each card has small variations in ink and pressure. Bouclé makes most of the handprinted cards here from linocuts, with its interlinked hands, house in hand, lavender and citrus in hand designs, and festive holly, mistletoe and fir tree cards for Christmas. So Just Shop makes hand embroidered cards and handmade upcycled paper cards in sets of four. We chose these makers for being clear about how each card is printed and what it is printed on.

More cards for every occasion

The Mood Club makes a You Make Me Feel range of cards with positive messages, printed in the UK on FSC-certified paper. Bouclé also sells cards from Studio Ohh Deer, David Shrigley and Studio Evermade. Write in them with a pen rather than a felt tip, as the ink can soak into soft paper. If you are posting cards abroad at Christmas, check the last posting dates early in December, and leave a day for the ink to dry before sealing envelopes.

Eco notebooks and planners

Eco notebooks use recycled or upcycled paper and simple bindings. Sintra Naturals makes handmade upcycled A6 notebooks in dark grey, a weekly planner pad and a vegan stationery set with a pouch and pencil. Ration.L makes the R-Thought notebook, and The Mood Club makes notebooks such as Happy Thoughts and Exciting Plans, sold singly or in a bundle of three. Catalyse Life makes a weekly reset planner. Delphis Eco makes a Collaborate To Zero notebook.

Calendars and finishing touches

Sop makes a perpetual type calendar that you reset each month, so it lasts for years, and Bouclé sells David Shrigley calendars and pencils. For wrapping, Keep This Cracker and So Just Shop make tags for presents, and Harfi makes luxury wrapping. Lovewell makes stickers, and Habulous makes a ceramic flower card holder. Cards keep best flat and away from damp. Greeting Cards has plantable and recycled cards, Gift Wrapping has wraps and tags, Christmas & Seasonal has Christmas decorations, and Biodegradable, compostable, recyclable: What these words actually mean explains paper labels.

Common questions

What does handprinted mean on a card?

It means the design was printed by hand, often from a carved lino or wood block, rather than on a digital press. Each card varies slightly.

Are these notebooks made from recycled paper?

Several are. Sintra Naturals uses upcycled paper, and The Mood Club prints on FSC-certified paper. Check each listing for the paper details.

What is a perpetual calendar?

A perpetual calendar has no fixed year. You change the date by hand, so it can be used year after year.

Can you recycle handprinted cards?

Most paper cards can go in paper recycling, as long as they have no glitter, foil or plastic. Embroidered cards need the thread removed first.
