Choosing a natural perfume for women
A natural perfume for women uses plant oils for its scent rather than synthetic fragrance, so it smells softer and changes as it warms on your skin. Spray it on your wrists and neck, and do not rub, which breaks down the scent faster. Haoma makes the perfumes here, and Bouclé and Sop make the essential oils. We checked each brand's ingredients and where its oils come from before listing it.
Single note and blended perfumes
Haoma makes eau de parfum with certified organic oils, in 50ml sprays. The single note scents, lavender, orange and ylang ylang, each use one essential oil, while No 1 and frankincense and myrrh are blends. Haoma's perfumes are vegan, and the ingredients are listed in full on each page. A single note is a good start if you are not sure what you like, and a blend gives a fuller scent. Haoma also makes a Clarity mood roll for your bag. Natural scents sit closer to the skin than many high-street perfumes, so they suit offices, trains and anyone who dislikes strong fragrance. Try a scent on your skin for a day before buying a second bottle.
Aromatherapy blends and single oils
Bouclé makes aromatherapy blends such as neroli, vetiver and may chang, patchouli, cardamom and mandarin, and duos for relaxing, focus and energy. Its winter blends, such as fir tree, orange and mulling spice, suit Christmas. Bouclé and Sop also sell single essential oils such as peppermint, rosemary, bergamot and black pepper. Use a few drops in a diffuser or burner, and never put undiluted oil straight on your skin.
Diffusers and oil burners
Bouclé makes ceramic oil burners in Dunes and Stripe designs, each sold with an essential oil blend, and a rattan reed diffuser in clove bud and cinnamon bark. A burner and oil set makes a thoughtful Christmas present for anyone who likes to scent a room without a candle. Keep burners away from curtains and never leave one lit unattended. Women's Body Care has scented body oils, Aromatherapy has more blends, Beauty Gifts has gift ideas, and Eco swaps for beauty: The ones that actually work has more ideas.
Common questions
What makes a perfume natural?
It uses essential oils and plant extracts for its scent rather than synthetic fragrance. Haoma's perfumes list every ingredient on the page.
Is there a vegan perfume for women?
Yes. Haoma's eau de parfum range is vegan. Check each listing for the full ingredients.
Why does natural perfume fade faster?
Plant oils evaporate more quickly than many synthetic scents. Reapply during the day, and keep the bottle somewhere cool and dark.
Can I put essential oils on my skin?
Not undiluted. Mix a few drops with a carrier oil first, and patch test on your inner arm.
