Why choose a body oil
A body oil sinks into skin and leaves it soft and glowing, without the water or emulsifiers a lotion needs. That makes it a simple, concentrated moisturiser for dry skin. Many shop-bought oils are mostly mineral oil with added fragrance, so check that plant oils lead the ingredient list. Silvan Skincare makes oils such as Soothe and Radiance, Wild Rising Skincare makes coconut and orange and coconut and rose blends, and SKNFED makes organic oils in rose, cranberry and a glittering version for evenings.
Organic body oil and natural body oil
An organic body oil uses certified organic plant oils, while a natural body oil uses plant ingredients that may not all be certified. Both avoid mineral oil. Bouclé makes organic blends with carrot seed and mandarin, rosemary and frankincense, and English lavender, and Douvalls makes organic argan oils. Coconut oil feels light and smells sweet, jojoba is close to the skin's own oils and absorbs quickly, and argan oil is rich and silky.
Massage oil and organic massage oil
A massage oil needs enough slip to glide without absorbing too fast, so blends with sweet almond, grapeseed or coconut work well. Bouclé makes a natural massage oil with mandarin, patchouli and ylang ylang, and many of the oils here double as a body and massage oil. An organic massage oil with essential oils turns a shoulder rub into a proper ritual. Warm the oil in your hands first, and use a towel underneath to protect sheets. A light, unscented oil is the safest choice for anyone with sensitive skin.
How to apply oil for the softest skin
Apply oil to damp skin after a bath or shower and pat dry, which spreads it further and helps it absorb. A few drops is enough for each limb. Refills, such as the coconut and orange refill from Wild Rising Skincare, cut packaging. Store oils away from sunlight and use them within a year of opening, because natural plant oils slowly lose their freshness. Organic Body Oil and Vegan Body Oil narrow the range, Aromatherapy has essential oils for blending, and Bath Products has bath oils and salts.
Common questions
Should I use body oil or lotion first?
If you use both, apply lotion first and body oil on top, because oil seals in moisture. Many people with dry skin use body oil alone on damp skin after showering.
Is body oil good for dry skin?
Yes. Body oil is a concentrated moisturiser that softens dry skin and helps reduce moisture loss. Apply it to damp skin so it spreads further and absorbs well.
What is the difference between body oil and massage oil?
Body oil is designed to absorb into skin, while massage oil stays on the surface longer so hands can glide. Many oils work as both, and the product page will say.
Will body oil stain my clothes?
Body oil can mark fabrics if it has not absorbed. Apply a small amount to damp skin and wait a few minutes before dressing.
