Choosing a natural floor cleaner

Eco floor cleaning starts with a concentrate, as most of what you mop with is water. A natural floor cleaner uses plant-based cleaning agents, and you only need a small dose in a bucket of warm water. Check which floors it suits, and test a small patch on waxed or oiled wood. MadeKind makes a natural floor cleaner in a 500ml glass bottle, scented with essential oils, plus a floor cleaner starter kit. Delphis Eco makes a lemon gel floor and surface cleaner in Britain that works across hardwood, tile, laminate, slate and vinyl. The brands here are open about their ingredients and where they make them.

Floor cleaner refill sizes

A floor cleaner refill keeps the cost and the packaging down. MadeKind sells refills in 1, 3 and 5 litres to top up its glass bottle. Raindrop makes plastic-free refill tablets for spray mops that dissolve in tap water. Pour a capful of concentrate into a bucket of warm water, or follow the dose on the label, as using more does not clean better and can leave a film.

Eco floor cleaner for wood, tile and stone

An eco floor cleaner should be gentle enough for sealed wood and laminate and strong enough for kitchen tiles. eco-mate makes a concentrated eco floor cleaner for most hard floors. For natural stone, avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar, which can etch the surface. Wring the mop well on wood and laminate, as standing water can swell the boards. On tiles, a second pass with clean water lifts any grit left in the grout lines.

Commercial floor care

For shops, cafés and large spaces, Delphis Eco makes a commercial low foam floor cleaner, a floor maintainer concentrate and a floor polish in 5 litres, for sealed wood, vinyl, linoleum and rubber floors. Sweep or vacuum first, then mop from the far corner towards the door, so you never walk on the wet floor. Multi-Purpose has surface sprays, Bathroom & Toilet has bathroom cleaners, Tools & Cloths has brushes and cloths, and Eco-home essentials worth building a room around picks the basics for each room.

Common questions

Can you use natural floor cleaner on wooden floors?

Yes, on sealed wood, as long as you wring the mop well. Test a small patch first on waxed or oiled floors.

Is natural floor cleaner safe for pets?

Delphis Eco labels its lemon gel floor cleaner pet safe, and MadeKind says its floor cleaner won't harm pets. Let floors dry before pets walk on them.

How much floor cleaner should you use?

Follow the dose on the label, usually a capful in a bucket of warm water. Using more does not clean better and can leave a sticky film.

Do you need to rinse after mopping?

Usually not, if you use the dose on the label. If floors feel sticky, you are using too much, so cut the dose next time.
