Choosing men's watch straps

Men's watch straps come in set widths, so measure the gap between the lugs on your watch before you buy. Most here come in 16mm, 18mm or 20mm, and the listing gives the width and buckle colour. Votch makes most of the straps, using Piñatex from pineapple leaf fibre, AppleSkin made partly from apple waste, and other vegan leathers. The Sustainable Watch Company makes zebrawood straps and vegan Apple Watch straps. Before a brand joins Ziracle, we look at the materials it uses and how its products are made.

Straps for Apple Watch and classic watches

Votch makes AppleSkin Apple Watch straps in navy, black, dark grey and off-white, with space grey, silver or rose gold fittings. For classic watches, its vegan leather straps come in black, brown, tan, navy, sage, slate grey and brighter colours such as coral and burnt orange. A black or brown strap with a silver buckle suits work, while sage or navy adds colour at the weekend. Many men's watch straps here use quick-release pins, so you can change them without tools.

Men's wooden watch styles

Bear Essentials makes each men's wooden watch with a 42mm case in woods such as sandalwood, zebrano and maple, including chronographs like the Orion, Alder and Altair. Its watches come with a choice of vegan or real leather straps, so pick the vegan option if you avoid leather. The Sustainable Watch Company makes the Banyan, Yew, Cedar, Hemlock and Sycamore wood watches. Wood is light on the wrist, and each case has its own grain.

Solar and vegan watches

Votch makes the Solar Classic, which is charged by light, plus the Aalto, a 40mm watch with a nautical look, and the Lyka with a blue dial. Straps come in Piñatex, vegan leather or steel mesh, and the Aalto gift set includes three straps in one box. A watch makes a lasting Christmas present, and a spare strap is an easy add-on. Men's Belts has vegan belts to match, Men's Sunglasses has wooden frames, Watches has more styles, and Can leather be sustainable? The honest answer compares leather and its alternatives.

Common questions

How do I know what strap width I need?

Measure the gap between the lugs where the strap attaches, in millimetres. Each listing gives the strap width, usually 16mm, 18mm or 20mm.

What is Piñatex?

It is a leather alternative made from pineapple leaf fibre. Votch uses it for straps and some watches.

Are all the watches vegan?

Not all. Bear Essentials watches come with a choice of vegan or real leather straps, so check the strap option before you order.

How does a solar watch work?

A solar watch is charged by light through the dial. Wear it often or leave it near a window so it stays charged.
