Choosing a natural shampoo

A natural shampoo cleans the scalp with plant-derived surfactants and essential oils rather than harsh detergents and synthetic fragrance. Any shampoo removes oil and dirt, so the difference is how your scalp feels afterwards. Look for a gentle cleansing base, a scent you like and a format you will keep using. Faith in Nature makes the largest range here, including coconut, jojoba, wild rose, lavender and geranium, and shea and argan. An organic shampoo uses certified organic ingredients, and Organic Shampoo gathers them. Each shampoo met our standard on ingredients and transparency before it went on sale.

Sulphate free shampoo

A sulphate free shampoo cleans with milder surfactants instead of SLS or SLES, which suits dry, coloured and curly hair. Most shampoos here state they are sulphate-free, but check the ingredients on each listing. Sulphate-free formulas lather less, so add a little more water rather than more product. Sulphate free shampoo for coloured hair is gentler on the dye between colour appointments. Dot & Lola makes a clarity shampoo, and Douvalls makes argan and ungurahua shampoos. If your scalp feels tight or itchy after washing, a milder, unscented formula is a sensible first change.

Shampoo refill, bars and powder

A shampoo refill cuts packaging, because one 5 litre bottle replaces more than ten standard bottles. Faith in Nature and MadeKind sell 5 litre sizes, Faith in Nature also sells 2.5 litre bottles, and Dot & Lola makes a refill pouch. Refillable Shampoo lists every refill option. Bars and powders need no bottle at all. The Powder Shampoo makes powders you mix with water in your hand, and Plastic Free Shampoo gathers the bars and powders.

Shampoo for your hair type

Choose a clarifying shampoo for oily roots, a moisturising one with shea or coconut for dry hair, and a gentle, low-lather formula for curls. Massage the scalp with your fingertips for a minute and let the lather run through the lengths as you rinse. If you switch from a conventional shampoo, give it two weeks, as hair can feel different while old build-up washes out. Conditioner has matching scents in the same sizes and refills, and Vegan Shampoo lists the vegan formulas.

Common questions

What is the difference between natural and regular shampoo?

Natural shampoo uses plant-derived cleansers and essential oils, and usually skips SLS, parabens and synthetic fragrance. Regular shampoo often uses stronger detergents that lather more.

Is sulphate free shampoo better for your hair?

Sulphate-free shampoo is gentler, which suits dry, coloured and curly hair. Very oily hair may still like a clarifying wash now and then.

How do you use a shampoo bar?

Wet your hair, rub the bar between your hands or glide it over your roots, then massage and rinse. Let the bar dry on a draining dish between uses so it lasts.

Why does my hair feel different after switching to natural shampoo?

Hair can feel heavier or drier for a few washes while build-up from previous products washes out. Most people find it settles within two to three weeks.
