Choosing soy wax candles
Natural wax candles use plant waxes such as soy, rapeseed or coconut, or beeswax, rather than paraffin. Soy wax candles burn slowly and hold scent well, and a cotton or wooden wick keeps the flame steady. Check the scent source too. Essential oils and natural fragrance give a softer scent than strong synthetic fragrance. Bouclé sells most of the soy wax candles here, many hand-poured in small studios in Brighton and London with pure essential oils. Every candle maker here was checked for what goes into its wax and how openly it lists its scents.
Essential oil candles and natural candles
Essential oil candles blend oils such as lavender, rosemary, neroli and vetiver. Bouclé's range includes rosemary, lavender and clary sage, and neroli, ylang ylang and lavender. Ubiety hand-pours natural candles in Wiltshire from a blend of rapeseed and soy, in copper tins and large jars. MadeKind makes soy wax candles called Sleep Well, Awaken, Focus and Unwind, and Flawless makes soy candles such as rose and vanilla and apple and cinnamon. So Just Shop sells a jasmine beeswax candle in a handmade clay pot.
Massage candles and refills
Some soy candles melt into a warm oil you can use on skin. IMperfectionists makes candles that melt into hand cream, in scents such as pomegranate and cedarwood, and Lovewell and Douvalls make massage candles. Bouclé sells ceramic candle refills and subscriptions, so you keep the vessel and only replace the wax. Douvalls also makes a soy wax candle making set.
Winter candles, gifts and care
For Christmas, Bouclé makes winter candle trios and a fir tree, orange oil and mulling spices candle, and Ubiety makes a Christmas copper tin candle. Bouclé also sells snuffers, wick trimmers and personalised candles for weddings. Trim the wick to about 5mm before each burn, let the wax melt to the edge the first time, and burn for no more than four hours. Home Fragrance has wax melts and reed diffusers, Christmas & Seasonal has more Christmas presents, Aromatherapy has essential oils, and How to bring more hygge into your life has ideas for cosy evenings.
Common questions
Are soy wax candles better than paraffin?
Soy is a plant wax from a renewable crop, and it burns slowly with a soft scent throw. Paraffin comes from petroleum. Both need a well-trimmed wick to burn cleanly.
How long do soy wax candles last?
It depends on size. Many candles list a burn time, often 30 to 60 hours for a standard jar. Burning for up to four hours at a time helps them last.
Why does a candle tunnel?
Tunnelling happens when the first burn is too short. Let the wax melt to the edge of the jar the first time you light it.
How do you use a massage candle?
Light it, let a pool of wax melt, then blow it out and wait a minute. Pour a little of the warm wax onto your hand and test the temperature first.
