Choosing a gua sha
A gua sha is a flat stone you glide over oiled skin to massage the face, a practice that comes from traditional Chinese medicine. Your fingertips can give a similar massage, so a gua sha tool earns its place for its smooth edges and cool feel. Look for a stone with a notch for the jaw and a curve for the cheeks, and a polished finish that will not drag. Wild Rising Skincare and Baie Botanique make rose quartz stones, Organically Epic makes a black obsidian stone, and Bouclé makes jade and rose quartz heart-shaped tools. Every tool here met our standard on materials and transparency.
Face roller and facial tools for massage
A face roller rolls over skin with light pressure and feels cooling, especially if you keep it in the fridge. Bouclé makes a jade face roller, Baie Botanique makes a rose quartz dual action roller and Heiko Clothing makes a bamboo facial roller. Silvan Skincare makes a radiance facial set, and Dead Sea Dream makes a T-bar face massager. Facial tools like these work best with upward and outward strokes for a few minutes, a couple of times a week or daily if you enjoy it.
Konjac sponge and cleansing tools
A konjac sponge is made from the root of the konjac plant and softens in warm water into a gentle cleansing sponge. Baie Botanique and Dead Sea Dream make konjac sponges, Baie Botanique makes a dual action facial cloth, and Bare Addiction makes a silicone cleansing scrubber. Rinse sponges well and let them dry between uses, and replace a konjac sponge every two to three months.
LED face mask and light devices
An LED face mask shines coloured light onto the skin as part of a skincare routine, and Maysama makes the range here, including AURA LED light therapy devices and LED skincare bundles. Follow the maker's instructions on session length and eye protection, and ask a GP before using one if you have a light-sensitive condition. Oils & Balms has oils to glide your tools, Face Masks pairs with a mask brush, Vegan Skincare Tools lists the vegan options and Healthy Skin brings the routine together.
Common questions
How do you use a gua sha?
Apply a few drops of face oil, hold the stone almost flat against your skin and glide it upwards and outwards in slow strokes. Keep the pressure light, especially under the eyes.
Should you use a face roller or a gua sha?
A roller is quicker and easier for beginners, while a gua sha gives a firmer massage along the jaw and cheekbones. Many people use both.
How do you clean a gua sha or face roller?
Wipe it with warm, soapy water after each use, rinse and dry it with a soft cloth. Store it somewhere it will not chip.
How often should you replace a konjac sponge?
Every two to three months, or sooner if it starts to break up or smell. Rinse it well and let it dry fully between uses.
