Choosing wax melts

Wax melts give you scent without a flame on the wax itself. Pop a cube into a burner, light a tealight below, and the warm wax releases its fragrance. Habulous makes most of the soy wax melts here, handmade in eco soya wax, in scents from Parma violet and honeysuckle and elderflower to lemongrass and ginger, rhubarb and plum and fresh cotton. Winter scents include gingerbread, spruce, clementine and winter wreath. Habulous says one pack gives about 150 hours of fragrance. We checked each maker here for clear scent information and how it makes its products.

Natural incense and incense sticks

Natural incense is made with plant materials and essential oils rather than heavy synthetic perfume. Bouclé makes hand-rolled incense cones and incense sticks in scents such as Californian sage, sandalwood and ylang ylang, oud and cedar, and lemon balm and citronella. It also sells palo santo, ceramic incense holders and matches in amber glass jars. Burn incense on a heatproof holder and open a window afterwards. Cones give a short, strong burst of scent, while sticks burn more slowly for a longer, gentler scent.

Reed diffusers for a natural home fragrance

Reed diffusers give a steady, flame-free scent. A natural reed diffuser uses a plant-based base and essential oils, with rattan reeds that draw the oil up. Bouclé makes rattan reed diffusers, Flawless makes reed diffusers such as Awaken orange and lemongrass and wild plum and Damascan rose, BristolMade makes a rhubarb and rose diffuser, and Ubiety sells diffuser oil refills with new reeds. Flip the reeds once a week to refresh the scent. Sop makes electronic ceramic diffusers.

Burners, holders and care

Bouclé sells ceramic wax burners and oil burners, and Habulous makes stoneware tealight holders and match striker pots. Never leave a burner unattended, and keep it on a flat, heatproof surface away from pets and children. Natural home fragrance works best in layers, with a reed diffuser in the hall and wax melts in the living room. Candles has soy wax candles, Aromatherapy has essential oils, Christmas & Seasonal has Christmas presents, and Best reed diffusers and natural home fragrance compares our favourites.

Common questions

How do you use wax melts?

Put one or two cubes in the top of a wax burner and light a tealight underneath, or use an electric warmer. When the scent fades, tip out the old wax and add a new cube.

How long do wax melts last?

Each cube gives several hours of scent, and Habulous says a pack gives about 150 hours in total. Replace the wax when you can no longer smell it.

How often should you flip diffuser reeds?

About once a week. Flipping them refreshes the scent, but doing it too often uses up the oil faster.

Is incense safe to burn indoors?

Burn it on a heatproof holder in a ventilated room, and never leave it unattended. Keep it away from pets and children.
