Choosing an eco laundry detergent
An eco laundry detergent cleans with plant-based ingredients, comes in packaging that is easy to recycle or refill, and works at lower temperatures. Washing at 30°C rather than 40°C saves energy, and modern detergents are made to clean well at that temperature. Plastic free laundry detergent such as sheets or powder in a cardboard box cuts out the plastic bottle altogether. Every brand here met our checks on ingredients and packaging.
Laundry sheets and tablets
Laundry sheets are pre-dosed strips of detergent that dissolve in the drum, so there is nothing to measure or spill. WABLU makes laundry sheets in all-in-one, coloured wash and fragrance-free sensitive versions, in packs and bundles, plus Naked Wonder Tabs. Eco Green Living makes non-bio laundry detergent sheets in lavender and unscented. Vove makes laundry detergent tablets and a starter set. Sheets are light and flat, so they also travel well for holidays.
Non bio laundry liquid and powder
Non bio means the detergent has no enzymes. eco-mate makes concentrated non bio laundry liquid in lavender, juniper, sandalwood and cedarwood, and fragrance free. Delphis Eco makes non-bio laundry detergent in 700ml and 2 litres, and a non-bio laundry powder with a refill tin. What is the difference between bio and non bio?
Bio detergents contain enzymes that break down protein and grease stains. Non bio detergents have no enzymes, which some people prefer for delicates and baby clothes.
How do laundry sheets work?
Each sheet is a measured dose of detergent that dissolves in the drum. Put it in the drum before your clothes, and use two for large or very dirty loads.
Is eco laundry detergent good at 30°C?
Yes. Most eco detergents are made to clean well at 30°C. Pre-treat tough stains with a stain remover bar or spray first.
Do you need fabric conditioner?
No, but it softens towels and reduces static. Dryer balls do a similar job in the tumble dryer without any liquid.
