Choosing aromatherapy oils
Aromatherapy oils are scented plant oils used in diffusers, baths, massage and rollers. Pick scents you enjoy, check whether an oil is pure or already blended, and read the safety notes on each bottle. Citrus oils such as sweet orange smell bright and fresh, while lavender, vetiver and ylang ylang are softer and suit the evening. Bouclé makes most of the aromatherapy oils here, alongside Haoma, Sop, SKNFED and Sintra Naturals. We checked each brand for clear ingredient lists and safety information.
Organic essential oils
Organic essential oils come from plants grown without synthetic pesticides. Sop makes organic essential oils in 10ml bottles, including tea tree, geranium, lavender and sweet orange. Add a few drops to a diffuser or to a carrier oil for massage, and never take essential oils by mouth. Check with a midwife or GP before using essential oils if you are pregnant, and keep them away from children and pets.
Aromatherapy roller and pulse point oil
An aromatherapy roller holds a pre-diluted pulse point oil that you roll onto wrists, neck or temples. Bouclé makes pulse point rollers in blends such as mandarin, myrrh and garden mint, lavender, vetiver and rose, and ylang ylang, jasmine and patchouli. Haoma makes organic Tranquility and Focus mood rolls, and SKNFED makes an aromatherapy ritual set. Patch test any new blend on a small area of skin first. Store oils upright in a cool, dark place with the lids tight, as light and air change their scent over time.
Aromatherapy room spray and gift sets
An aromatherapy room spray scents a room or pillow in seconds. Haoma makes an organic pillow and room mist, MadeKind makes a Sleep Well pillow spray, Sintra Naturals makes a room and linen spray, and Bouclé makes a travel aromatherapy spray. Haoma also makes organic Relax and Recovery massage oils. For Christmas, Bouclé's aromatherapy gift sets bring rollers and sprays together in one box. Home Fragrance has reed diffusers, Candles has essential oil candles, Mindfulness Tools has affirmation cards, and Self-care for stress: Small rituals that actually help has ideas for winding down.
Common questions
Can you put essential oils straight on skin?
No. Dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before they touch skin, or choose a ready-blended roller. Patch test first.
Are essential oils safe in pregnancy?
Some are not recommended in pregnancy. Check with your midwife or GP before using essential oils.
What is a pulse point oil?
It is a pre-diluted aromatherapy oil in a roller bottle. Apply it to wrists, neck or temples, where you can smell it through the day.
How do you use a pillow spray?
Spray it lightly over your pillow from about 30cm away. Do it a few minutes before bed, so it has time to dry.
