Choosing a natural baby shampoo

A natural baby shampoo should be mild, lightly scented or unscented, and gentle enough to double as a body wash. Babies only need a bath two or three times a week, with water alone often enough for newborns. Choose fragrance-free or very lightly scented products for the first few months, and keep the bottle closed and out of reach. Mama Bamboo makes an organic baby shampoo and body wash, an organic baby lotion and a soft bamboo baby hairbrush. We checked each brand here for clear ingredient lists.

Baby lotion and children's skin care

A baby lotion helps keep skin soft after a bath. Douvalls makes a children's organic argan oil moisturiser and a Little Dreamer care set, plus a children's sleep spray for the bedtime routine. Sintra Naturals makes a Little Warriors newborn gift set and a vegan shampoo bar. Introduce one new product at a time, so you can tell what suits your baby. Patch test any new product on a small area of skin first, and speak to your health visitor about any rash or dry patches.

Bath time essentials

SilverGuard makes an organic cotton hooded baby towel that wraps round straight after the bath. Never leave a baby or young child alone in the bath, even for a moment. Gather everything you need before you start, and check the water with your elbow or a thermometer. A natural baby shampoo rarely needs more than a small drop. Rinse with a jug of clean, warm water, shielding the eyes with your hand, and keep a dry towel within reach before you lift your baby out.

Kids' oral care and gifts

Georganics makes kids' oral care packs with or without fluoride. The NHS advises brushing children's teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste suited to their age. For new baby gifts, Bouclé and Wild Rising Skincare offer build-your-own gift boxes, and a hooded towel with a baby lotion makes a thoughtful present. Feeding & Weaning has weaning sets, Toys & Games has cardboard playsets, and Towels has organic cotton towels for the whole family.

Common questions

How often should you bath a baby?

Two or three times a week is usually enough, and water alone is fine for newborns. Wash the face, neck and nappy area daily.

What temperature should a baby's bath be?

Around 37°C, which feels warm but not hot. Check with your elbow or a bath thermometer before you put your baby in.

Can baby shampoo be used as body wash?

Many are made to do both. Mama Bamboo's organic baby shampoo and body wash is one product for hair and skin.

When should you start brushing a baby's teeth?

As soon as the first tooth appears. The NHS advises a smear of fluoride toothpaste for children under three.
