There is something quietly special about a mug that was made by hand, for the hand. Habulous designed this one to sit comfortably in your grip — the flared base and generous 8.6cm rim width give it a stability and openness that mass-produced mugs rarely bother with.
The narcissus motif is not a print or a transfer. Each flower is painted by hand using a wax-resist method: the design is applied in wax, the mug is glazed, and when it comes out of the kiln, the wax burns away to leave a delicate floral silhouette. No two mugs are identical. Yours will be close to the ones pictured, but not exactly the same — which is the point.
Narcissus flowers carry associations with hope, wealth, and good fortune at New Year, and are the birth flower for December. If you are buying this as a gift, that context is worth knowing.
The stoneware clay itself does practical work too. Stoneware retains heat better than earthenware or standard porcelain, so your tea or coffee stays at the right temperature while you actually drink it rather than going cold on the desk.
