Choosing a dog shampoo
A good dog shampoo is made for dogs' skin, which has a different pH from ours, so avoid using your own shampoo. Look for a gentle formula, a clear ingredient list and a scent that is light rather than strong, as dogs have a far keener sense of smell than we do. Faith in Nature makes pH-balanced washes for dogs in lavender and coconut, plus a chamomile dog and puppy shampoo, in standard bottles and 5 litre refills. The brands here explain what goes into each bottle.
Natural dog shampoo and grooming
MadeKind makes a natural dog shampoo in a deodorising formula, and a natural fur detangler and conditioning spray for longer coats. Flawless makes a nose balm for dogs. Wet your dog all over with lukewarm water, lather the shampoo along the back and legs, and keep it away from the eyes and ears. Rinse well, as leftover shampoo can leave the coat dull. Most dogs only need a bath every few weeks, or when they have rolled in something. Towel dry well and keep your dog somewhere warm until the coat is fully dry, especially in winter.
Compostable poo bags
Eco Green Living makes certified compostable poo bags with no plastic, in boxes of 60, 100, 180 and 240 and in three-box packs. A roll in each coat pocket means you are never caught out, and a bulk box keeps the cost per bag down for daily walks. Dog poo bags should go in a public dog bin or your general waste, not the home compost or food waste bin, unless your council says otherwise.
Bowls, toppers and accessories
Habulous makes stoneware water bowls by hand, including a spaniel bowl you can personalise with your dog's name. Loving Foods makes Organic Doggykraut, a kraut made for dogs. Wash bowls daily in hot, soapy water, and refill water bowls with fresh water at least once a day. A heavy stoneware bowl is harder for a lively dog to tip over than a light plastic one. Floor Cleaning has pet safe floor cleaners, Laundry Care has detergents for dog bedding, and Tools & Cloths has brushes and cloths for muddy paws.
Common questions
Can you use human shampoo on dogs?
It is best not to. Dog skin has a different pH from human skin, so use a shampoo made for dogs.
How often should you wash a dog?
Most dogs only need a bath every few weeks, or when they get very dirty. Brushing in between keeps the coat clean.
Can you put compostable poo bags in the compost?
Dog waste should not go in a home compost heap used for food growing. Put used bags in a dog bin or general waste unless your council says otherwise.
Is the chamomile shampoo suitable for puppies?
Faith in Nature makes its chamomile shampoo for dogs and puppies. Check the label for the minimum age.
