Bouclé says its Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) comes only from naturally fallen branches in Peru, so no living trees are harmed in collection. The wood develops its distinctive fragrance only after the tree has naturally completed its life cycle, which is why fallen wood is the right source rather than a compromise.
