Most of us never think about what our dishcloth is made of. Many are microfibre, which is a kind of plastic, and every wash releases tiny fibres that are too small for waste treatment plants to filter out. This one is knitted from cotton instead, so there is nothing to shed.

What it is for: It is highly absorbent and durable, and it works on dishes, countertops and general cleaning. Some people also use it as a mini hand towel. If you want a matching kitchen, Wild & Stone also make organic cotton hand towels.
Why cotton rather than a sponge or synthetic cloth: Cotton is biodegradable and naturally antimicrobial. Wild & Stone describe it as a microfibre cloth without the microplastics, and that is a fair summary of the swap.
Keeping it fresh: Rinse it before it goes in the machine to avoid build-up, and wash it hot. Skip the fabric softener, which reduces absorbency. If it starts to smell, soak it in warm water with vinegar before washing. Full care details are listed in the care section of this page.
When it is finished: Cut it into strips and put it in your compost bin, where it will biodegrade back into the earth. Wild & Stone's own copy says so, and it is one of the benefits of choosing a natural fibre.
