A Swedish dishcloth is part sponge, part cloth, and it does the job of both without the plastic. This Wild & Stone set gives you four, in grey, white, pink and green, so the cloth that wipes the hob never gets confused with the one that wipes the bathroom.

The swap in practice Most common sponges and cloths last a couple of weeks before they are binned. They are usually plastic-based, so they cannot be recycled or composted, and they shed microplastics that end up in oceans and wildlife. A cloth you can wash again and again changes that arithmetic. When it is finally worn out, cut it into strips and put it in your household compost bin. Every choice adds up, and this one lives by your sink.
A bit of history Swedish engineer Curt Lindqvist invented the Swedish dishcloth in 1949. It is a hybrid of natural wood fibre and cotton, usually about the size of a book. These ones measure 17.2 x 20 cm.
What it is made from The cellulose is FSC® certified (licence C007915), which means the wood fibre is certified against the Forest Stewardship Council® principles and criteria, including maintaining forest ecosystems and respecting indigenous peoples' land rights. The cloths also use waste cotton, are printed with water-based ink, and are made in Sweden.
