Choosing a ceramic soap dish
A soap bar lasts longer when it can dry between uses, so the shape of the dish matters more than the colour. Look for ridges or raised feet that lift the bar, and drainage holes that let water run off rather than pool. Habulous makes most of the ceramic soap dish range here, by hand in a studio on Dartmoor using British clay. Its Moorland dish, for example, has ridged edges, hand-poked drainage holes and small clay feet. Colours include off-white, pale pink, mint green, cornflower blue, light yellow and glazed moorland and shoreline designs. We picked makers who say what each piece is made from and who makes it.
Handmade soap dish and wooden soap dishes
Sintra Naturals makes a handmade soap dish in ceramic, plus a shampoo bar dish. For wood, Auklett and Clean U Skincare make wooden soap dishes, and Green Island makes one in FSC beechwood. So Just Shop sells soapstone dishes, including a marbled pink hippo and a large tray. Wooden dishes need to dry fully between uses, so tip out any water. A ceramic soap dish that is glazed all over can usually go in the dishwasher.
Refillable soap dispenser options
A refillable soap dispenser lets you buy hand wash in bulk. Bouclé and MadeKind make amber glass bottles with pumps, eco-mate makes a matt black metal soap pump, and Colt & Willow makes a refillable aluminium pump bottle. Faith in Nature makes pump dispensers that fit its 2.5 litre, 5 litre and 20 litre refills, and Raindrop and Sop make replacement pumps.
Bamboo cotton buds and finishing touches
Bamboo cotton buds swap plastic sticks for bamboo, and come from Auklett, BristolMade and Bouclé. Habulous also makes stoneware wall hooks and a ceramic light pull, Dot & Lola makes matt black wall brackets, and Bouclé makes seagrass bins. Tube squeezers from Georganics and Seeds of Colour get the last of the toothpaste out. Soaps & Cleansers has bars to go on your dish, Towels has organic cotton towels, Bathroom & Toilet has natural cleaners, and Best natural soap bars rounds up our favourite bars.
Common questions
How do you stop a soap bar going soggy?
Use a dish with drainage holes or ridges so the bar sits out of the water, and keep it away from the shower stream. A bar that dries between uses lasts much longer.
How do you clean a ceramic soap dish?
Rinse it in warm water once a week to clear soap residue. Fully glazed dishes can usually go in the dishwasher, but check the maker's care note.
How do you refill a glass soap dispenser?
Unscrew the pump, top up the bottle from a refill pouch or bulk bottle, and screw the pump back on. Rinse the bottle every few refills.
Are bamboo cotton buds biodegradable?
Bamboo sticks and cotton tips break down far more readily than plastic sticks. Put them in general waste, never down the toilet.
