Organic Orange Dark Chocolate Bar 70% Raw Cacao

Mr Popple's Chocolate uses unroasted Peruvian Criollo cacao — a variety that accounts for just 5% of global production — and sweetens this 70% dark chocolate orange bar with yacon syrup, a low-glycemic Peruvian root extract with a glycaemic index of 1, rather than refined cane sugar. Both the cacao and the sweetener are certified organic, and the bar is free from dairy, gluten, soya, nuts, and palm oil.

There are dark chocolate orange bars, and then there is this one. Mr Popple's Euphoric Orange is built around unroasted Criollo cacao sourced from a farmers' cooperative in Peru — a heritage variety so rare it represents roughly 5% of the world's cacao harvest. Keeping the beans unroasted preserves the full spectrum of flavour compounds and naturally occurring nutrients that roasting typically diminishes. The result is a 70% chocolate with genuine depth: notes of red fruit and earthiness that a standard dark chocolate bar simply cannot replicate.

The sweetener is yacon syrup, derived from the roots of the yacon plant native to Peru. With a glycaemic index of just 1, it adds a subtle caramel-like sweetness without the blood sugar spike that comes with refined cane sugar. It also acts as a natural prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria — a functional benefit that most chocolate bars cannot claim. The orange flavour comes from organic cold-pressed sweet orange oil at 0.5%, bright and citrusy without tipping into artificial territory.

Every ingredient in this bar is certified organic. The cacao is grown within the Amazon Rainforest using agroforestry techniques — its natural habitat — so no forest is cleared to cultivate it. The packaging is fully compostable and plastic-free, made from plant-based materials.

FAQ:

Q: Is the bar suitable for those with diabetes or insulin resistance? A: The low-glycaemic nature of yacon syrup makes this a better option than bars sweetened with refined sugars, but it is always best to consult a healthcare professional before incorporating any new food into your diet.

Q: Has the bar been scientifically tested for its overall glycaemic index? A: The bar has not yet been scientifically tested for its overall GI. The expected low GI is based on the use of yacon syrup, which has a GI of 1, as the sole sweetener.

Q: Can I use this bar for baking? A: Yes — it melts smoothly and adds rich, complex flavour with a citrus note. Bear in mind that yacon syrup may affect texture and sweetness levels differently from regular sugar.

Q: What is the source of the orange flavour? A: Organic natural sweet orange oil, cold-pressed from orange peel at 0.5% of the recipe.

About Our Brand Mr Popple's Chocolate

Most chocolate on the shelf has travelled a long way from anything resembling a cacao bean. Industrial processing strips out the naturally occurring compounds that make cacao genuinely interesting — the mood-lifting, stimulating qualities that are present in the raw bean but largely absent by the time a standard bar reaches you. Mr Popple's was built around a single question: what if you made chocolate that kept all of that intact?

The answer starts in Peru. Mr Popple's sources its cacao from a farmers' cooperative operating within the Amazon Rainforest — not on cleared land adjacent to it, but inside it, where cacao grows as it evolved to. The brand pays directly to the growers at a fair price, which means the people doing the most important work in the supply chain are the ones who benefit from it. The recipes do the rest: no refined sugars, no cheap fats, no palm oil. Ingredients that are there because they belong, not because they are cheap.

What makes Mr Popple's genuinely unusual is the decision not to scale. Most food brands that start with strong ethics find those ethics eroding as volume increases — direct relationships become brokered ones, oversight becomes auditing, care becomes compliance. Mr Popple's has held the line on that deliberately, keeping the operation small enough that every batch reflects a real understanding of where the cacao came from and who grew it. That is not a marketing position. It is a production decision, and it shows in the chocolate.
