Big Nose and Beardy's 2024 Turning Japanese Pyder is an easy-drinking blend that brings together unique flavours from local Sussex orchards. It features Japanese pears, sourced from Jenni in Horam, combined with a selection of Michelin and Cabaret apples.
This particular batch was harvested on a wet staff day with the team at St. Piers School, a testament to the hands-on, community-focused approach that Big Nose and Beardy brings to their production. The result is a complex, acid-led drink, beautifully layered with distinct woody pear notes.
Big Nose and Beardy specialises in authentic Sussex cider, focusing on traditional methods and natural fermentation. Their commitment to a closed-loop production system means they source most of their apples from local private gardens and orchards, hand-picking them with the help of volunteers. The pressing process itself is powered by solar, water, and human energy, minimising reliance on external power sources. After pressing, the apple pomace is fed to local pigs and cows, eliminating waste and enriching the local ecosystem. All packaging, including metal bottle caps, lightweight glass bottles, and cardboard cases, is fully recyclable.
This Pyder offers a refreshing alternative to mass-produced beverages, made with transparency and care for its environmental impact.
