A Sussex take on Pommeau, the traditional Normandy and Brittany digestif. Big Nose and Beardy blend their own apple juice with their Spirit of Cider. The spirit stops the juice fermenting, so the apple aroma, fruity sweetness and pleasant acidity all stay intact.

Because Pommeau is a protected designation, this one is called a Mistelle: the technical term for a drink that blends fruit juice with the alcoholic distillate of that same fruit.

At a glance:

  • Type: Apple Mistelle (apple juice blended with Spirit of Cider)
  • Strength: 17% alcohol
  • Size: 50cl
  • Taste: sweet, sharp and punchy, with full apple character

How to enjoy it: At 17% it behaves a bit like a liqueur, so you can serve it two ways.

  • Before a meal, as an aperitif. The sweet acidity sets you up for what is coming.
  • After a meal, as a digestif. This is the maker's favourite, and ours too.

Pairings the maker recommends:

  • Appley puddings, crumbles and sponges, including sticky toffee pudding. The sharpness brings out the fruity notes.
  • Dark chocolate. The maker says it is even better here, so do try it.

About the maker: Big Nose and Beardy makes Sussex cider by traditional methods and natural fermentation. Most of their apples come from local private gardens and orchards, picked by hand with help from volunteers. Pressing runs on a mix of solar, water and human energy. Their packaging (metal bottle caps, lightweight glass bottles and cardboard cases) is described by the seller as fully recyclable.

About Big Nose and Beardy

Big Nose and Beardy specialises in producing authentic Sussex cider, offering a refreshing alternative to mass-produced beverages. Their focus on traditional methods and natural fermentation addresses the desire for enjoyable drinks made with transparency and care for their environmental impact.

What sets Big Nose and Beardy apart is their dedication to a closed-loop production system. They source the majority of their apples from local private gardens and orchards, hand-picking them with the help of volunteers.
