Piñatex is made from the fibres of pineapple leaves, which are a by-product of the pineapple harvest. No extra land is cultivated, no additional pesticides or fertilisers are used, and the process creates an additional income stream for the farmers involved. It is a genuinely different material story — not a standard faux leather swap.
Because Piñatex is a natural material, it benefits from a little care. Votch recommends treating the strap with a natural wax — a clear dubbin works well — then leaving it in a warm spot for 24 hours before buffing with a soft cloth. That small routine will keep the strap in good condition over time.
