The Aalto is Votch's nautical-meets-minimalist timepiece — a 40mm brushed gold case with a white dial and a black Piñatex strap that does something most watch straps do not: it starts with pineapples.
Piñatex is made from the fibres of pineapple leaves, which are a by-product of the pineapple harvest. No extra land is cultivated, no additional pesticides or fertilisers are used, and the process creates an additional income stream for the farmers involved. The result is a strap material that sits outside the conventional leather-versus-synthetic debate entirely.
Because Piñatex is a natural material, it benefits from a little care. Votch recommends treating the strap with a natural wax — clear dubbin works well — then leaving it in a warm location for 24 hours before buffing with a soft cloth. Do that occasionally and the strap will wear well over time.
The watch itself is powered by a Japanese GL20 movement and is water resistant to 3ATM, making it splash-proof for everyday wear. The strap width is 20mm and the wrist fitting accommodates approximately 150–210mm.
