The ionantha is one of the most adaptable air plants you can keep. Its green tendrils — sometimes with a frosty, silvery base — sit happily on a shelf, inside a terrarium, or nestled into a Habulous ceramic holder without a gram of soil. The Rubra variation tends to run larger, with looser base tendrils and more noticeable red tips; any browning outer tendrils can be gently peeled away without affecting the rest of the plant. When it blooms, expect a purple shoot rising from the centre, tipped with a small white or yellow flower.
Three sizes are available to suit different Habulous holders or standalone display:
- Baby — suited to small bird holders and mini whale holders
- Small — suited to some small bird holders and whale holders
- Medium/Large — suited to jellyfish holders and large bird holders
If you are replacing a plant from an existing Habulous product, leave a note at checkout specifying which holder you have — some require a particular size to fit correctly.

Exact dimensions vary with season and stock, as these are hand-grown plants rather than manufactured goods.
How to care for your ionantha:
- Light: bright indirect light with good air circulation. Keep away from direct sun.
- Watering: mist weekly. Soak in water for one hour every one to two months.
- Drying: after soaking, leave the plant to dry fully before returning it to its display position. Trapped moisture causes rot — this is the one step that matters most.
