A monthly delivery of 14 bars, each 35g, from Mr Popple's Chocolate — a bean-to-bar maker that sources rare heritage Criollo cacao directly from a farmers' cooperative in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, where it is grown using sustainable agroforestry techniques within the rainforest's natural ecosystem rather than on cleared land.

The cacao is kept raw and unroasted throughout production. That single decision is what separates these bars from almost everything else on the shelf. Roasting destroys a significant portion of the polyphenols and antioxidants naturally present in cacao — Mr Popple's preserves them. Oxford Brookes University tested the chocolate against four leading UK dark chocolate brands and found measurably higher levels of antioxidants and polyphenols across the board.

The range spans a wide spectrum of intensity and sweetness:

  • Pure Peruvian 100% Raw Cacao — completely sugar-free, the purest expression of the bean
  • Atey Ate% 88% Raw Cacao — intense, sweetened with low-GI yacon syrup (GI of 1)
  • Signature Seventy 70% Raw Cacao — rich notes of caramel, red fruit, and earthiness; sweetened with yacon syrup and lucuma fruit powder
  • Euphoric Orange — 70% dark chocolate with orange oil, sweetened with yacon syrup
  • Amarillo Chilli Dark Chocolate — warming chilli kick in a dark base
  • Creamy Mylk — 42% cacao, sweetened with coconut blossom sugar, creaminess from rice and oat mylks and lucuma fruit powder
  • Dark Mylk — sits between the Creamy Mylk and Signature Seventy in intensity
  • Minty Mylk — refreshing mint milk chocolate, sweetened with coconut blossom sugar
  • Creamy Orange — milk chocolate with zesty orange oil

Sweeteners are chosen deliberately. Yacon syrup, derived from the Peruvian yacon plant, has a glycemic index of just 1 and is rich in prebiotic fibres. Coconut blossom sugar, used in the milk chocolate bars, is a lower-GI alternative to refined sugar and contains iron and magnesium. No refined sugars, no palm oil, no cheap fats.

Every bar in the range is:

  • Certified organic by the Biodynamic Association (BDA) — meaning no pesticides, herbicides, or GMO ingredients at any stage
  • Vegan
  • Free from the top 14 allergens, including dairy, gluten, soy, and nuts
  • Gluten-free and safe for people with coeliac disease
  • Dairy-free
  • Soy-free
  • Alcohol-free
  • Palm oil-free

Note on nut allergies: all recipes are nut-free and made in a dedicated nut-free environment. However, some ingredients are sourced from suppliers who also handle nuts, so traces cannot be fully guaranteed. Contact Mr Popple's directly if you have a severe nut allergy.

The bars sweetened with yacon syrup — Signature Seventy, Atey Ate%, and Euphoric Orange — have a GI of just 1 and are noted as suitable for people with diabetes. The Pure Peruvian 100% bar is completely sugar-free. Always consult a healthcare professional for individual dietary advice.

Raw cacao naturally contains small amounts of caffeine, as well as theobromine, phenethylamine, anandamide, and tryptophan — compounds associated with mood and cognitive function.

Packaging: All chocolate packaging is plastic-free and fully home compostable — the inner film and outer cardboard are plant-based. Shipping boxes are fully recyclable or compostable cardboard, with a cardboard alternative to bubble wrap and paper-based, plastic-free tape.

About Our Brand Mr Popple's Chocolate

Most chocolate on the shelf has travelled a long way from anything resembling a cacao bean. Industrial processing strips out the naturally occurring compounds that make cacao genuinely interesting — the mood-lifting, stimulating qualities that are present in the raw bean but largely absent by the time a standard bar reaches you. Mr Popple's was built around a single question: what if you made chocolate that kept all of that intact?

The answer starts in Peru. Mr Popple's sources its cacao from a farmers' cooperative operating within the Amazon Rainforest — not on cleared land adjacent to it, but inside it, where cacao grows as it evolved to. The brand pays directly to the growers at a fair price, which means the people doing the most important work in the supply chain are the ones who benefit from it. The recipes do the rest: no refined sugars, no cheap fats, no palm oil. Ingredients that are there because they belong, not because they are cheap.

What makes Mr Popple's genuinely unusual is the decision not to scale. Most food brands that start with strong ethics find those ethics eroding as volume increases — direct relationships become brokered ones, oversight becomes auditing, care becomes compliance. Mr Popple's has held the line on that deliberately, keeping the operation small enough that every batch reflects a real understanding of where the cacao came from and who grew it. That is not a marketing position. It is a production decision, and it shows in the chocolate.
